Stephen Spruiell on Hillary Clinton on National Review Online

It was supposed to be Barack Obama's big night. Hillary Clinton was supposed to step aside and let history happen. But she refused to play along. Earlier Tuesday she floated the idea that she'd be open to running as Obama's VP, leading to speculation that she's holding her supporters for that particular ransom. If that's the case — and if Obama extends the offer — prepare yourself for one of the most awkward (and hilarious) shotgun marriages in the history of politics. Oh, and kiss any hopes of a Republican holding onto the White House goodbye.

The vice-presidential talk is just for show.  Hillary wants Obama to lose so that the party turns to her in 2012, and no one dares to challenge her from the left.  She knows that Obama will not offer her the VP slot for several reasons.  First, it ruins his message of change to bring the Clinton's old baggage to the campaign.  Second, I can't imagine Obama wanting to have Bill Clinton hanging around the White House.  Finally, Michelle Obama will not allow Hillary to get the VP nomination.  It just won't happen.  And Hillary knows it.  But her supporters think that she is entitled to a spot on the ticket, and she can use the threat of further splitting the party to get what she wants from Obama, starting with retiring her campaign debt. Then the Clinton machine can quietly sabotage the Obama campaign so that Hillary can make a triumphant run in 2012.  I'm not saying that her plan will work, but that's what I expect from Hillary.  Never say die -- except to the other guy!
